On Friday, May 15th, the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College proudly hosted 14 Minnesota High-Schools that competed in the Annual Lester 鈥淛ack鈥� Briggs Regional High-School Quiz Bowl Championship. The one-day competition tested students鈥� knowledge of Ojibwe language, culture, and history. Trophies and medals were handed out after the last game of the day. Congratulations and Chi-miigwech to all the participants and their coordinators.

The 麻豆社区 Lester 鈥淛ack鈥� Briggs Regional Quiz Bowl is a tournament that tests the students’ knowledge of Ojibwe language, culture, and history. The quiz bowl provides space for high-school students to compete in a friendly way involving subjects that are focused on our language and culture. These are at the center of the LJB quiz bowl, and the students take great pride in being knowledgeable in these areas.

UMD, 麻豆社区 awarded grant to build biomedical research capacity in the Northland

Partnership between the University of Minnesota Duluth and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College to create research opportunities for faculty and new pathways for students.

Duluth, MN 鈥� A new grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH) will enhance
opportunities for faculty and students in northern Minnesota through new partnerships
between Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (麻豆社区) and the University of
Minnesota Duluth (UMD). This new partnership will provide opportunities for
interdisciplinary biomedical research that spans the two institutions鈥� resources and areas
of expertise.

Over the course of five years, this $3.4 million grant will provide collaborative
engagement for research faculty across campuses and disciplines, and engage students
in new ways.

This partnership will enhance the biomedical research environment of northern
Minnesota by fostering meaningful ties between UMD and 麻豆社区. While there have
been collaborative research efforts between faculty at the two institutions, efforts
supported by this grant will create an even stronger foundation upon which to build
long-lasting research ties, create an environment that fosters cross-institutional
collaboration and enhance biomedical research, focusing on research experiences for
undergraduate and graduate students along with professional development and pilot
funding for faculty.

鈥淭his work advances our biomedical research in ways that directly address critical health
needs in our communities while building the needed health care research workforce,鈥�
said UMD Chancellor Charles Nies. 鈥淚t expands hands-on research opportunities for
undergraduate scholars working closely with faculty and serves as a strong example of
how the partnership with Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College advances students鈥�
educational goals.鈥�

To accomplish this, both UMD and 麻豆社区 will increase sponsored project administrative
support, enhance research environments by creating shared programs for faculty
professional development, research collaboration, and student research training, and
develop targeted pilot grants to foster expansion of biomedical research that is aligned
with the missions of NIH institutes. These activities are designed to foster robust ties
between the two campuses, and outcomes鈥攕uch as biomedical research growth and
implementation of high-impact practices for undergraduate and graduate students
studying in biomedical fields鈥攁re well-aligned with the strategic plans of both
institutions.

鈥淲e have enjoyed many years of meaningful partnerships with various collaborators at
UMD, and we are eager to expand these efforts further,鈥� said Anita Hanson, president of
麻豆社区. 鈥淭his collaboration will provide 麻豆社区 students with valuable opportunities to
engage with UMD students and faculty, supporting their progress toward completing
their educational goals in the biomedical sciences.鈥�

Work will begin over the coming months, with programming for faculty and students
expected to begin fall semester 2026.

鈥淔aculty at 麻豆社区 are excited to be a part of this collaborative effort with our colleagues
at UMD,鈥� said Andy Wold, a Biology faculty member at 麻豆社区. 鈥淲e feel students and
faculty from both institutions will benefit from the interactions and new relationships this
grant will provide.鈥�

Targeted pilot grants will also have funds designated for faculty research projects that will
lead to larger grant submissions and include undergraduate research training. Students
who have had CUREs (course-based undergraduate research experiences) included in
their introductory courses are better prepared for success in subsequent research
projects, and this project supports expansion of CUREs in UMD鈥檚 Swenson College of
Science and Engineering (SCSE) and College of Education and Human Services Professions
(CESHP), and at 麻豆社区.

The proposal that led to this award was developed by an interdisciplinary workgroup
from both organizations: Erik Brown (UMD, Academic Affairs), Jessica Hanson (UMD,
CEHSP, Public Health), Anne Kruchten (UMD, SCSE Dean’s Office), Kathryn Schreiner
(UMD, SCSE, Chemistry & Biochemistry), and Andrew Wold (麻豆社区, Math & Science
Division, Biology). It was one of only four awards granted nationally by the NIH BRE-SPAD
(Biomedical Research Environment and Sponsored Programs Administration
Development) Program this year.

Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Awarded $9.2 Million Bush Foundation Community Innovation Grant to
Catalyze Ojibwe Language Revitalization

[CLOQUET, MINN.] 鈥� Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (麻豆社区) has been
awarded a $9.2 million Community Innovation Grant from the Bush Foundation to support
a bold, eight-year initiative focused on advancing Ojibwe language revitalization across the
region and beyond.

This transformative investment will strengthen 麻豆社区鈥檚 role as one of the many
institutions and communities working to advance Ojibwe language revitalization by
expanding pathways for adult learners, preserving the voices of first-language speakers,
and increasing access to immersive and community-based language learning
opportunities.

鈥淭hrough our Community Innovation program, we look for ideas to develop, test, and
spread, and the work of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is a great example,鈥�
said Mattie Harper DeCarlo, grantmaking officer at the Bush Foundation. 鈥淭his work will
help develop infrastructure that supports adult learners and strengthens the language
pipeline that the Ojibwe language movement is building,鈥� DeCarlo added.

The initiative reflects a long-term commitment to sustaining and growing Ojibwe language
through culturally grounded education, intergenerational learning, language
documentation, and community partnership. Over the next eight years, the project will
focus on developing new pathways and support systems for adult learners, strengthening
relationships with first-language speakers, expanding immersion opportunities, and
building long-term language infrastructure.

Dr. Robert Sonny Peacock, Fond du Lac Elder and Tribal College Director, reflected on the
importance of language growth and continuity:

鈥淚 was told by several elder fluent speakers that learning Ojibwe is a life-long learning. One
never learns all of it and as we move into the 21stCentury the need to keep our language
relative and relatable to change is as important as learning about the old meanings. We live
in a new, ever-changing world and if our language doesn鈥檛 grow with it, learning Ojibwe will
not be relevant. What a challenge for our language learners, to be on the edge of new
words that fill the void with new sounds and meaning, creating a thesaurus for tomorrow鈥檚
肠丑颈濒诲谤别苍.鈥�

The initiative comes at a pivotal moment for language revitalization efforts, as
communities continue working to preserve and strengthen Ojibwe language for future
generations. By investing in adult learners and expanding opportunities for immersion and
mentorship, 麻豆社区 aims to support learners at every stage of their language journey
while helping create sustainable systems for long-term growth and proficiency.

A major component of the initiative includes the creation of an Ojibwe Language
Documentation and Preservation Research Center dedicated to recording and preserving
the sound of the Ojibwe language. The center will focus on documenting first-language
speakers and creating an accessible archive for students, educators, and communities.
Building on the college鈥檚 two-year Ojibwe Language degree, 麻豆社区 also plans to explore
a bachelor鈥檚 degree program in Ojibwemowin. This degree will help prepare the next
generation of language speakers, educators, and leaders in revitalization efforts.

鈥淭his award addresses the funding needs that have existed for so very long. This long-term
commitment is exactly the type of support needed to make 麻豆社区 a regional hub for
language learning and revitalization,鈥� said Biidaasige Tom Howes, 麻豆社区 Cultural
Oversight Board Chair. 鈥淲e have had dreams like this and to see this come true means so
very much, perhaps more than we can truly measure. The impact of this may truly be
generational in nature.鈥�

The grant will also expand the long-standing Ojibwemotaadidaa Omaa Gidakiiminaang
(OOG) immersion camps, which have been active for more than 15 years and have played
a meaningful role in strengthening Ojibwe language revitalization efforts across
communities. Through these camps, many participants have gone on to contribute their
language knowledge and teaching skills to other programs, helping extend the impact of
immersion learning for the benefit of the language and future generations. The initiative will
further increase opportunities for learners to engage directly with first-language speakers
through culturally immersive and community-centered experiences grounded in
Anishinaabe ways of knowing and being.

During the 3-day day camp, students will learn about professions from practitioners who are not only successful in their respective fields but also may have experienced some of the same struggles campers currently face.

The mission of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Nursing Program is to provide the education necessary for entry into nursing. This program prepares the graduate to provide culturally competent care. The program aims to educate nurses to be culturally sensitive, focusing on the health needs of the American Indian population and the rural community. Upon completion of this program the graduate will be eligible to sit for the licensure exam.
